Your MIT ID What was I looking forward to most when I arrived on campus for Orientation (Pre-orientation rather)? MITâs next installment of the âHereâs a HUGE envelope full of colorful stuff for you to drool over.â of course! By this time my standards were pretty high. Letâs face it, Iâd gotten a tube in December, a huge envelope in March, and a bigger envelope in May. What could MIT give me that could top those three? I went to the second floor of the student center to pick up all of my goodies, secretly wondering if there was going to be a chorus line of dancing sea otters or something (Look, donât even try to understand my deepest, darkest musings. There might have been sea otters!). Instead I found a table with a bunch of paper and important looking stuff on it. I gave the guy staffing the table my name and he produced . . . a folder. Yay. Hereâs what I learned from this experience: MIT values different parts of its mail depending on your status of enrollment. If youâre at home and thereâs still even the slightest chance you wonât be attending then theyâll send you the most colorful, awesome stuff youâve ever seen, but as for the contents of your shiny new envelope, there isnât a whole lot of really neat stuff. Once you get to MIT, however, they care less about the packaging, but the kind of stuff that works its way into your envelope or folder is exponentially cooler. Inside I found all sorts of random pamphlets (âCopyright, Subpoenas, and Youâ), papers, stuff related to my pre-orientation program, and then I found awesome. I had no idea when I was supposed to get my ID card, I figured Iâd fill out some paperwork and then a week later be given it, but to my surprise it was ready for me when I got there. You know what an MIT ID card means, right? It means you are, officially, without a doubt, guaranteed, a student at MIT. It was officially official. Come August youâll all be getting your ID cards and with them YOU CAN RULE THE WORLD! well, not so much. What are MIT ID cards good for (other than for flashing at anybody who asks for picture ID. That means you Blockbuster video guy, I know you were jealous!)? Let me give you the rundown. New World Symphony Wow, I just managed to, by way of an obscure reference, cover two topics with one phrase. The first thing your ID card lets you do is get access to your dorm (New World Symphony, âGoing Homeâ, anybody? Anybody at all? Be a bigger band geek!). Every dorm is card access only. Burton-Conner residents can get into Burton-Conner, Baker residents can get into Baker, and Senior House residents can get into Senior House. Most dorms require a card swipe but East Campus has brand new RFID readers, meaning instead of pulling their ID card out of their pocket to get into their dorm, they just have to jump and throw themselves at the wall. Weâre all jealous. In addition to getting into dorms, your ID card is also used for card access to various labs, lounges, and buildings. My ID gets me into the Media Lab and when I declare Course 2 itâll get me into the MechE lounge. All MIT IDs will get you access to the Z-Center so you can swim, jump, shoot, or do whatever sport it is you do. Other than get you into places on campus, your MIT ID will also get you into places off campus (Iâm about to talk about my not-so-obscure reference). Boston is a huge city with a bunch of neat things going on. There are art museums (Museum of Fine Arts), science museums (Boston Museum of Science) and symphony concerts (Boston Symphony Orchestra). Your MIT ID will get you into all of these for free. Howâs that for special treatment? You could have a contest, how much cultural enrichment can you get for free in one day with your MIT ID? TechCash As college students (paying a $48,000 tuition) many students at MIT donât have cash on them. Cash is important, it buys food (Which is what you need in order to live. Youâll find that parents will call you every day in order to remind you of this). TechCash is a system that lets you store money on your ID card. Since you always have your ID on you, the thinking is that you will always have money on you. You can load your ID with TechCash either online or on the bottom floor of the student center in Card Services. Once you have TechCash all you need to do is make sure you shop at a place that accepts it (which isnât too terribly difficult). Several places that take TechCash: The COOP (including text books and software) Everything in the Student Center (except USPS) Economy Hardware Quiznos Cafes and restaurants in/above the Infinite Corridor I subsist almost solely on TechCash. Iâll pay cash for dinner in Boston but mostly Iâm a TechCash guy. I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that all of my loans go almost directly into TechCash? Discounts There arenât a lot of discount options with your MIT ID, but the two that I know of are significant. The first is a software discount. There are tons of places online that sell discounted software to students (AcademicSuperstore.com for one). Youâll need your ID to prove that youâre a student. Another discount that you probably donât know about is the Bose discount you get. Thatâs right, Bose, the speaker/headphone company. Mr. Bose is an MIT alum and, as such, decided to be a really nice guy to MIT students. Undergraduates (and maybe graduate students too?) can call a special phone number and order any number of different Bose products, receiving something on the order of a 10% discount on anything. Iâve yet to cash in on this, but I have a feeling that there are Bose products in my future. Something you may want to know about your ID card is that you only get one. Sure, if you lose it you can get it replaced, but in general you will find seniors who have the same ID card they had as a freshman. The expiration date listed on my card is June 2011, meaning they fully expect me to hold on to this card for the next four years. Along the same lines, youâll want to make sure you have a good picture on your ID. Donât think that if a picture is blurry when big that itâll look ok when shrunk to ID size, itâll still be blurry and gross. Take some time and find a nice, good, clear picture of yourself for your ID, you wonât regret it at all (youâre going to be looking at that picture of you several times a day for the next four years). I believe if the staff treats the inmates with respect and not like scum because of their crime this also helps stop violent behavior. Some of the strategies for responding to violent behavior are to put one who has violent behavior in solitary confinement, adding more time to their sentence that they have, or even loosing privileges such as going outside to receiving mail from friends and family. Most people who are incarcerated donââ¬â¢t want to be there any longer than they have to and they just want to serve out their sentence without having any problems. The more violent ones behavior is will determine how much longer their sentence will last. If a prisoner has violent behavior all the time they are more likely to be incarcerated longer than they need to be. If the inmates had things to do, and could take classes and earn a degree or do something with their life while they are in jail it would give them hope for when they are free. I truly believe that it is all based on respect. If the inmates can learn to respect one another and respect the staff that is only doing their jobs, the prison system would have less violent behavior going on. For hundreds of years, the homosexual community, heretofore referred to as the LGBT community, has experienced discrimination and persecution around the world. However, the world has progressed since the times of such irrational displays of hatred and fear as the blood libels of Europe or the Salem Witch Trials. Yet, there are still places that are shrouded in retrogressive, un-liberated policies of the Middle Ages. Iran is one of these seven remaining countries in the world that still employs the death penalty as punishment for homosexuals acts. Since the Iranian Revolution in 1979 lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights have been reduced to nothingness. According to numerous human rights watchdog organizations, Iranââ¬â¢s treatment of people who have committed such ââ¬Å"crimesâ⬠1 is in direct and flagrant violation of the most essential human rights. Although the Iranian government claims that they have never executed anyone for said crime of homosexuality, this is of course disputed by many sources, including viral internet videos of gay men being publicly hanged. Human rights activists and opponents of the Iranian regime claim between 4,000 and 6,000 gay men and lesbians have been executed in Iran for crimes related to their sexual preference since 1979â⬠(The Telegraph). The unjust treatment and persecution of homosexuals in Iran has led to numerous deaths by stoning, hanging, and suicide, along with the fleeing of many Iranian homosexuals to surrounding countries to try to [1] seek political asylum. There are several factors, historical, religious, and socio-political, that culminated in the social backwardness that is evident in Irans horrific and unjust treatment of its own homosexual citizens. The Islamic Republic of Iran is a land whose social and cultural landscape has been shaped by a myriad of religions, including Zoroastrianism and Islam, and the sweeping influence of European interference. Conveniently situated in between the Middle Eastern nations and the Eurasian continent, the expansively vast Iran (636,372 square miles) is literally the bridge between two worlds. After the unification of the ancient Iranian tribal peoples, there were four dynasties that preceded the Muslim conquest (651 AD). The peoples of Persia before the Muslim conquest adhered to the teachings of Zoroaster, which stressed equality, the prohibition of slavery, and human rights. The Zoroastrian religion flourished during the time of the Achaemenid Dynasty, and the Persian region in this period saw an unmatched measure of prosperity and peace. The battle of al-Qadisayyah in 632 AD marked a turning point in Persias history as it released the flood gates and made possible a full-fledged Muslim invasion and subsequent conquering of Persia. Although the Muslim conquest of Persia left the conquerers in control of a huge portion of the unified Persian territory, the Persian conversion to Islam is considered to be a gradual and complicated process. By the 9th century, Islam was the majority religion of the region, and the conversion of native Persians to the Islam had a profound affect on their lives; similarly, the interaction of the unique Persian identity with Islam had a singular affect on Islam in the region. The Middle Ages in Iran saw accomplishments in arts, literature, sciences, religion, mathematics, and architecture that paralleled that of the European Renaissance. The Early Modern Era (1501-1925) ushered in a new period for Persia. Under the auspices of Shah Ismail I and his Safavid Dynasty, Persia was united into the first Shia Islam state. Following this initial unification were a series of political moves in which the leaders of the dynasty moved the capital of the state from city to city. Two more dynasties followed the Safavids, in spite of their weak leadership and political scandal, they managed to maintain sovereignty until the corruption of the Qajars yielded increased colonization efforts and ultimately, the institution of the first parliament of Persian in 1906. The continued abatement of the strength of the Qajar Dynasty reached its pinnacle when Reza Khan led a coup detat against them and became Shah in 1925. Under his leadership, Iran industrialized, leading to the establishment of an educational system and a railroad network that took advantage of Irans convenient location near the Caspian Sea. Reza Khan was forced to abdicate his position, at which point the Pahlavis came to power. The Pahlavis led lavish lifestyles, and using revenues from oil reserve profits, they made enterprising moves towards ââ¬Å"The White Revolution,â⬠which was a series of reforms that were aimed at empowering the social classes that supported the monarchy. In essence, the reforms targeted the lowest classes in order to co-opt efforts against the increasingly alienated middle class. However, the middle class was not the only enemy of the Pahlavis; the (mostly exiled) religious institution of Iran was incredibly hostile towards their efforts towards the White Revolution. One religious clergy, Ayatollah Khomeini advocated for a return to relgious Islamic values and a rejection of the Pahlavi agenda. The efforts of Khomeini culminated in widespread uprisings and revolts, and ultimately would be referred to as the Revolution of 1979. The foundation of the revolution rested upon the return to highly fundamentalized Islamic values, and thus laid the groundwork and the future justification against homosexuality. The new Islamic Republic of Iran, founded by Ayatollah Khomeini, rests on three pillars, the rule of Islamic jurists, the hijab (veil) for women, and the continued opposition to Israel and the United States. The modernizing efforts of the Pahlavi reign was replaced by cultural repression that embraces outmoded stances on womens rights, religious tolerance, and human rights that has coalesced into the Iran we know today. The roots of the criminalization of homosexuality in the Islamic Republic of Iran has its foundations in the Islamic Religion. In order to understand the policies of modern Iran regarding this issue, it is crucial to examine the historical implications. ââ¬Å"Of the Islamic states that ban lesbian and gay sex, Iran is the most zealously homophobic. Since 1980, when the fundamentalists came to power under the leadership of Ayatollah Khomeini, over 4,000 lesbians and gay men have been executed, according to estimates by the exiled Iranian homosexual rights group, Homanâ⬠(Tavakoli). Islam is one of the most intolerant world religions when it comes to homosexuality. Verses from the Koran are clear in forbidding sexual acts if they are not between a married man and woman. In all Muslim countries where the Islamic Shariââ¬â¢a law is enforced, homosexuality is illegal. The specific origin of the religious injunction can be found in the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, in which two men who engage in a carnal relationship and therefore suffer the consequences from G-d. The passage says, ââ¬Å"If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death, their blood is upon them. The Koran has seven references to Sodom and Gomorrah. Surprisingly, there is only one passage in the Koran that pertains to what can be referred to as a legal position on homosexuality. It states, ââ¬Å"And as for those who are guilty of an indecency from among your women, call to witnesses against them four (witnesses) from among you; then if they bear witness confine them to the houses until death takes them away or Allah opens some way for them. And as for the two who are guilty of indecency from among you, give them both a punishment; then if they repent and amend, turn aside from them; surely Allah is oft-returning (to mercy), the Mercifulâ⬠(Translated by Shakir). Although this is not black and white with what to do, it has provided guidance. Islamic jurists often turn to the collections of hadith, ââ¬Å"a narrative record of the sayings or customs of Muhammad and his companions,â⬠(Merriam-Webster) and Seerah, accounts of Muhammadââ¬â¢s life) to further their argument for punishments that may be very harsh by modern standards. Many Islamic scholars see homosexuality as a sin and punishable offense. Because there is no specific punishment established, the law is usually interpreted by local authorities at their own discretion. The moral that some people draw from the Koran is that someone who participates in homosexual acts is contradicting G-dââ¬â¢s creation of humans and by default is disobeying G-d. However, Islam is not the only religion to condemn homosexuality, in fact, almost all Western religions consider it to be a transgression of some holy law, including Judaism, Catholicism, and Christianity. The difference between these religions and Islam in Iran is that in almost every Westernized nation there has a separation between Church and State. In the case of Modern Iran, however, there is no such separation, and thus violating religious law is synonymous with violating civil law. It is in this way that fundamentalist clerics in Iran consider homosexual acts analogous to treason: If Islam is the law of the State, and Muslim law considers homosexuality blasphemy, then by proxy it is comparable to high treason. Since the Iranian revolution, the legal code has been based on Islamic Shariââ¬â¢a law. ââ¬Å"This law states that all sexual relations that occur outside of a traditional, heterosexual marriage are illegal and no legal distinction is made between consensual or non-consensual sexual activities. Homosexual relations that occur between consenting adults in private are a crime and carry a maximum punishment of death. These laws apply to males as young as fifteen, who then become eligible for the death penaltyâ⬠(Misak). Forced homosexual relations, rape, often results in execution. In some circumstances, sodomy can be a crime for which both partners are punished by death. ââ¬Å"If this crime of sodomy is committed, both partners are punished. The punishment is death if the participants are adults, of sound mind and consenting. The homosexuals are executed based off the decisions of the Sharia judge. A young male who is not considered an adult who engages in homosexual activities is punished by being lashed 74 times. â⬠(Misak). In the case of a person not consenting, the punishment would only apply to the rapist. The punishment for consenting gay females is 100 lashes. If the homosexual act is repeated three times and punishment is enforced each time, the death sentence will apply the fourth time. ââ¬Å"Under Islamic law, which has been adopted by Iranââ¬â¢s legal system, it takes four witnesses to prove an act of homosexuality, which is a capital crime. Thatââ¬â¢s why itââ¬â¢s much easier for the Islamic government to invent other criminal charges against gay people to get rid of themâ⬠(Ireland). Ireland also shares, ââ¬Å"Iranians found guilty of gay lovemaking are given a choice of four death styles: being hanged, stoned, halved by a sword or dropped from the highest perch. According to Article 152 of Iranââ¬â¢s penal law, if two men not related by blood are found naked under one cover without good reason, both will be punished at a judgeââ¬â¢s discretionâ⬠(Ireland). Often, other charges are fabricated and tacked on to the initial charge in order to imprison or execute homosexuals. An example of this is ââ¬Å"a prominent social critic and historian, Ali Akbar Saidi-Sirjani, died in detention in November, 10 months after his arrest on improbable criminal charges. The Government claims Saidi-Sirjani died of a heart attack but did not permit an independent autopsyâ⬠(U. S. Department of State). Saidi-Sirjani was charged with offenses ranging from drug dealing to homosexuality. These convictions are falsely obtained leading to more inhumane and unjust acts against the people of Iran. There are no laws that protect Iranians from hate crimes related to sexual orientation. The Iranian government believes that no such thing exists within the borders of the country and that everyone there is heterosexual. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stated in a speech at Columbia University, ââ¬Å"In Iran we dont have homosexuals like in your countryâ⬠followed by, ââ¬Å"In Iran we do not have this phenomenon, I dont know who has told you that we have itâ⬠(Agence France-Presse). Not only is he ignoring the truth, but he is blatantly lying. Because of this harsh reality of ignoring what is really going on and the severity of the punishment if found out, many gay Iranians do not feel comfortable coming out to even their family members. In traditional Iranian families dating is usually prohibited, so telling your parent that you are gay is an unfathomable thought. Often, gay couples are scared to even be seen together in public. Social prejudices, fear of being caught, and overwhelmingly realistic threats of punishment often keep LGBT Iranians in ââ¬Å"hidingâ⬠. They socialize discretely at private get togethers, but even in private these get togethers can be raided by the police. In 2007, ââ¬Å"Iranian authorities staged a brutal and violent May 10 raid on a birthday party in Esfahan which they suspected was a gay party, beating the guests and arresting 87 people, including four women, one of whom had a child with her. Some 80 of those arrested made bail or were released immediately but face possible prosecution in the future; while 17 of those arrested were imprisoned awaiting trial, and a judge told their families that they would be charged with ââ¬Ëhomosexual conductââ¬â¢ and the consumption of alcoholâ⬠(Direland). Raids like these are reoccurring and unlawful. Media and press are constrained by censorship and are subject to violating ââ¬Å"national securityâ⬠. Unless used to promote the policy of the government, anything related to the LGBT community is prohibited. An example of this is in 2005 when. ââ¬Å"Irans leading reformist newspaper has been shut down by the countrys hardline government after the daily Shargh published an interview with an Iranian-Canadian poet who called for greater gender equality in her homelandâ⬠(CanWest News Service). In the interview, ââ¬Å"Saghi Ghahraman, a 50-year-old lesbian who fled Iran after its 1979 fundamentalist revolution and now lives in Toronto as a Canadian citizen, told CanWest News Service on Monday that the interview with Shargh (East) focused largely on poetry and literature but that she also stressed the importance of people being able to ââ¬Ëchoose oneââ¬â¢s own identity, and oneââ¬â¢s own sexual identityââ¬â¢ ââ¬â provocative views to print given Tehranââ¬â¢s strict policies against homosexualityâ⬠(CanWest News Service). To avoid being shut down, ââ¬Å"Shargh published a front-page apology for its interview with Ghahraman, saying it had been ââ¬Ëunaware of this personââ¬â¢s personal traitsââ¬â¢ and would in future ââ¬Ëavoid such people and movementsââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (CanWest News Service). This is just one of the form the governmentââ¬â¢s control of the people. By limiting any possible resources, it is taking away the ability for people to connect with other homosexuals around the world. Most Iranians who have attempted to seek asylum in other countries have failed. ââ¬Å"Gay and lesbian individuals fleeing Iran seek refugee status under the ââ¬Ëmembers of a particular social groupââ¬â¢ (MPSG) clause of the 1951 United Nations Convention and Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees. However, despite the international nature of the 1951 Convention, member states serving as Third Countries in which the refugees are permanently settled subscribe to differing interpretations of the 1951 Convention, resulting in conflicting applications of international law to those seeking refugee status for their sexual orientationâ⬠(Bretz). There was in increase in Iranians fleeing the strict restraints in 2007. ââ¬Å"300 gays who have fled Iran since the rise of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who infamously proclaimed in 2007, to guffaws from his audience at Columbia University, that there were no gays in Iran. Most have crossed the border into Turkey, joining 2,000 Iranian refugees largely political dissidents and religious outcasts facing waits of two to three years as the United Nations processes their applications for asylumâ⬠(Fiola). Turkey is only a stepping stone in the whole process of living in a permanent, safe environment. ââ¬Å"Turkey grants the refugees sanctuary just until the United Nations can find them homes in the United States, Canada, Western Europe or Australiaâ⬠(Fiola). Hussein Nasseri, a gay Iranian man escaped Iran and fled to the UK because he ââ¬Å"feared he would be executed if he were deported to his native Iranâ⬠(Moore London Bureau). Nasseri ââ¬Å"killed himself after the British government turned down his second appeal for asylumâ⬠(Moore London Bureau). Another story is of ââ¬Å"one young Iranian who fled to Turkey [who] says he was targeted by authorities for two offenses: going public with his homosexuality and taking part in last years post-election anti-government protestsâ⬠(Kenyon). The young man went to ââ¬Å"Turkey in May, fully intending to return to Tehran and his family. But now hes applying for asylum to the United States and says he cant go back as long as the current government holds power. He says he would face arrest not just for his sexuality but for taking part in the protests that rocked Iran in 2009 after the elections, which were attacked as fraudulent, that returned Ahmadinejad to powerâ⬠(Kenyon). ââ¬Å"While he was in Turkey, Voice of America interviewed him and broadcast a part of the documentary in which he talked about being shot during the protests, and about Ahmadinejads views on homosexuality. The next day, he was told, security forces raided his house in Tehran and took his father for questioning. Haghjoo went straight to the U. N. refugee agency and applied for asylumâ⬠(Kenyon). These pleas for a safe haven in a new country are not rare. People seeking a better life should have the option to do so and not be exported when in need of help. In conclusion, discrimination and persecution of homosexuals in Iran is intolerable. The Iranian Revolution in 1979 has reduced the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people to nothingness.

Organizations continue to look for training for achieving their goals and for achieving for high goals and performance (Krieger, Mclinden, and Casper 2004). Organizational training is a method used to achieve max imum profit and to achieve maximum productivity (tan, hall, Boyce 2003). Organization learning and organization training is the key for the organization success (Egan, yang, Bartlett 2004). Organization learning and training not only contribute on the performance of the organization but also reduce the cost, its helps in reducing turnover rates and helps to train the existent employee to perform well for the organization (Egan, Yang, Bartlett, 2004). A trained employee will always try to put his extra knowledge in the job and always will try to improve the performance of the organization (Burke and Baldwin, 1999). Many organizations spend million of money for the training session in a year so that they achieve the maximum performance and outcome (Krishnaveni and Sripirabaa, 2008). Organization should use training program for the satisfaction of employees (Krishnaveni and Sripirabaa 2008). facilitating trainer training programs will enhance the trainer job performance in organization (Lim 1999). Supervising the trainee and the trainer design will help the trainee to promote the organizational objectives (Lim 1999). well-trained employees do a more efficient and effective jobs and training would decrease the chances of mistakes. (Saibang and Schwindt 1998). While training an employee it should be noted that training should be according to the behavior and interests of the employees . The lack of diversity training especially with respect to trainee characteristics is increasingly a serious problem (Roberson ,Kulik ,Pepper 2001). one thing should be kept in mind while training an employee that the expectations from the employee should be realistic ( Drake, Mackler, Stephens 2002) Training also strengthens the commitment of the employees to the organization which helps in the organization objective. (Eaglen, Lashley, Thomas 2000 ). The cross culture training is done in organizations to make the cross cultural assignment successful , which helps in the organizations performance . Bennet , Aston ,Colquhoun 2000) Organizational performance (dependent variable): Strategies on the implementation of training and development are the core for the business success (Wilkins 2001). The more the organization emphasizes on the organizations performance, the more it emphasizes on the training of the employees (Eaglen, Lashley, Thomas 2000) . The benefit of trained employee is th at they promote the performance of the organization (Glance, Hogg and Huberman 1997). If the manager decides to train his members then the productivity of the organization will increase (Glance, Hogg and Huberman 1997). ncreasing the training and skills of the employees will also enhance the effective of the organization (Collins , Holton 2004). In organizational performance, there is a big role of learning and training of employees. (Hutchins, 2009). The human resource development can provide professional staff development that can enhance the organizational performance in a positive way (Holmes 1998). A Streetcar Named Desire: The Impact of Scene One Paper Reading the scene description at the beginning of Scene One, one is immediately drawn to the name of the building in which Stella and Stanley live: Elysian Fields. One later realises that this is a misnomer. It suggests ideal happiness and the perfect resting-place we all strive to reach. It has special significance, therefore, because this description is far from true in the case of Williamss characters. Despite its name, the section is poor, but one is told that it possesses a raffish charm. The area is disreputable, later reinforced by particularly coarse-minded Negro women; but the atmosphere is pleasant. One has the impression that the area was once intended to be very upmarket, suggested by its quaintly ornamented gables, but that its grandeur has deteriorated with age. Ever present in the background there is the fluent melody of the blue piano, acting as an accompaniment to the action that takes place in the foreground. Personally, I feel that the blue piano sums up the entire atmosphere of the scene. It is jazzy and enjoyable, but at the same time it creates an impression of sadness there is an underlying factor that is clear to pick out. The whole scene what one can see and hear is an oxymoron: pleasant but sad. In the words of Mr Williams himself, the blue piano expresses the spirit of the life which goes on here. The atmosphere is more obviously established by the opening lines of the scene. There is a Negro woman making sexual references (lick her, icy cold wave all up an down her) as well as a street vendor shouting out, Red hot! . The area is culturally and ethnically diverse: there are Negro women, white Americans, and a sailor. One also learns more about the area by listening to what these minor characters are saying. Not much more can be said about the minor characters, but Williams uses them to full effect at the beginning of the play, where they are most important. Not only do they set the scene, as discussed, but they also captivate the audience right from the start, before the even more interesting main characters come on stage. The minor characters also have one more ri le at the beginning: they provide a stark contrast for the entrance of Blanche. Whereas they are loud, brash and confident, Blanche is totally different. Williams says she is incongruous to this setting. This is evident from her appearance. She is dressed in gloves, bodice and necklace, and it is all white, which always suggests purity. Even her pearl earrings serve to highlight her beauty, and even her fragility. She is indeed fragile Williams describes her as delicate and uses the simile of a moth in other words, she should avoid the light not so that she does not get burned, but so her beauty is not affected. This reference to light comes up throughout the play. Later in this scene, Blanche orders her sister to turn the light off it shows she is hugely vain and maybe not so naturally beautiful after all. Blanches character is evident in these first few moments. The way she looks in shocked disbelief at Elysian Fields reveals her standards. Also evident from the clothes, she is obviously a rich lady or was one. There is also a touch of vanity here: if she is no longer rich (although the audience does not know this yet), then how can she afford such clothes? The answer is that her appearance is her lifes priority. After Blanche is admitted into the apartment, her manner stays the same. She is obviously uncomfortable and is unused to such conditions. She sits tightly, and this perching gives the impression of a fragile and very timid bird. At the same time it reveals something new about her personality: she likes to be in control. She does not like the situation, so she controls its effects on her by curling up into a ball like a hedgehog. But this does not last. She soon becomes less tense and begins to look around her, like anybody would. At first this may be seen as natural curiosity, but knowing Blanches nature, one would realise that her reason is very different: she is looking for something to drink. I think that this surprises the audience somewhat. So far it has seen this refined lady, who seems respectable in every way, despite being quite uptight. And yet here is the chink in her armour she has a drinking problem. For it is very obviously a problem later on, dramatic irony is utilised when Blanche searches for something to drink in the presence of her sister, pretending as if she does not know where the bottle is. And shortly after that the audience can see her shaking. This may be put down to the unusual situation she is in, or the revelations she has to tell, but her alcohol problem is no doubt a contributor to such behaviour. Perhaps most obviously, the act of searching through things she disapproves of goes entirely against her nature, and this accentuates the problem she has. In fact, there is some comedy here: she still washes the glass. This obviously hides her problem from others, but it also reminds the audience that she has not forgotten her snobbish values altogether. Blanche has many more bad points. Her vanity is further indicated by her constant need to bathe. The references to water are frequent. But her worst attributes are the ways in which she communicates with other people, most notably in the first scene, her sister. As mentioned before, Blanche likes to be in control: she exerts her authority over her sister by giving her orders And turn that over-light off! . She is also constantly seeking praise from Stella. This could be because she needs to feel better than Stella does in order to have a relationship with her. It is also because she is very vain she knows that she is beautiful. Blanche is also quite nasty at times. A classic line of hers is, I meant to be nice about it she reveals her falseness here. Instead of being genuine and honest, she had intended to lie to her sister. And the fact that she tells this to Stella means that she is very tactless and ignorant of other peoples feelings. Another classic quotation is this one: Where were you? In bed with your Polak! . There are two things that are nasty about this line. The first is that she tries to blame poor Stella for everything that has happened at Belle Reve, even though she was not there. Secondly, she uses a derogatory term to describe Stanley showing that she is both full of hate for Stanley himself and rather racist towards Polish people. I believe this is the point at which the audience fully realises that Blanche is not a nice person. Yet there are two good things to be said about Blanche. The first is her education. She is obviously very knowledgeable. Her references to Edgar Allen Poe are suitably intelligent, and suggest both her privileged upbringing and her current career. The second is her actions at the end of the scene, when the audience is forced to feel pity towards her. At the mention of her early marriage, the polka music, which is associated with Blanche throughout the play, accompanies her as she responds very quietly and then faints. This rather reminds me of a similar scene in The Glass Menagerie when Laura faints, although one is more inclined to pity Laura than Blanche. Stella is totally different to Blanche. Unfortunately, no description of Stella is given, except that she is a gentle woman, but one can tell by their characters that they have different outlooks and attitudes to life and other people. The only thing the two women share is their upbringing, but they are even distinguishable here by their present situation. Blanche has stayed comfortable for as long as she can, eventually being forced out of her lifestyle by a situation, whereas Stella has already willingly given up her birthright and her privileges to be with the man she loves. This definitely says something about Stella: she is not materialistic or snooty, and she regards people other than her self as important. Stella interacts with Blanche and Stan in different ways. She is the little sister to Blanche, ready to comply with her wishes immediately. She dare not refuse Blanche, perhaps because she is a guest, but more likely because Blanche has a stronger personality an example is when she turns the light off for Blanche. This is not an issue as far as Stan is concerned. She will still give Stan what he wants, but she is more ready to stand up to him: Dont holler at me like that, she says, albeit mildly. Mildness is Stellas usual stance. But we see that even she draws a line somewhere. When Blanche bombards her with blame for Belle Reve, Stella is understandably very upset (she cries she is emotional), but she also stands up to Blanche by saying, Blanche! You be still! Thats enough! . It is interesting that she says this immediately after Blanche brings Stan into the equation as if Stella loves Stan so fiercely that she will not let anyone harm him, verbally or otherwise. Stan himself is very much a mans man, and one gets the impression that he is incapable of such love that Stella has for him. He virtually ditches Stella in order to go bowling with his friend Mitch he could not care less whether she came to watch him or not. He bellows in a confident manner, and later on several associations are made with him and animals. He is a raw male, who evidently enjoys the company of women, but perhaps does not regard them as equal: he uses words such as baby and little woman he tries to put Stella in her place and exert his superiority. Finally, he is not very bright: his humour is obvious, coarse and not at all funny. Havent fallen in, have you? . There is a lot to learn about the nature of each of the characters in the first scene, but there is perhaps more to learn about their histories and their present situations. Exposition is used right from the start. Notably, much is learned about Blanche through almost a hot-seat approach of Eunice asking her questions. In a few short lines we learn that Blanche has a sister called Stella and that Stella is married both her maiden name and her married name are mentioned. We also learn that Blanche is a teacher, that she lives in Mississippi in a home called Belle Reve. We are even told that it has white columns! More is learned about Belle Reve later when Blanche is being very dramatic to Stella, blaming her for everything that has gone wrong. Yet more exposition is used at the very end of the scene, when we learn that Blanche was married once and that the boy died. This is obviously important for the rest of the play it is purposefully there to end the scene and stay in the minds of the audience members. Finally, there is one thing I have not yet mentioned, because I believe it to be the most important part of the scene, and perhaps part of one of the general themes of the play. This important part is the directions given to Blanche to get to Stellas apartment. She must take a streetcar named Desire and transfer to one called Cemeteries, where she will be taken to Elysian Fields. As well as being the obvious source for the title of the play, this signifies a natural progression in life in general. Desire, to death, to the Elysian Fields, or Heaven. At the moment I am not able to comment much on its meaning, but it is definitely very important.
